The capacity for high ambition

In 2015, Penti began to build a comprehensive ERP environment based on the SAP HANA in-memory data platform, but the company wanted to avoid the expense and effort of adding new physical infrastructure. To meet its high performance, security, and availability requirements, and deliver the scalability to support its growth and ambition, Penti decided to run SAP HANA in the cloud on Azure.

“As we expand and learn more about what we can do with SAP HANA, capacity and scaling will become big issues for us,” says Dursun. “We use SAP S/4HANA on Azure to help ensure service availability, maximize data security, and reduce operational costs—while we increase our business flexibility.”

SAP HANA on a high-availability cloud architecture

Penti worked with CoreToEdge—a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider and SAP partner—to design and build a high-availability cloud architecture to support SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Hybris Marketing, SAP Customer Activity Repository for retailers, and other SAP functionalities. Penti will host 14 productive SAP HANA database instances on SAP-certified Azure Virtual Machines M-Series servers, offering high performance for SAP HANA workloads with Intel Xeon E7-8890 v3 processors, running the SUSE Linux Enterprise operating system.

Altogether, Penti hosts more than 62 SAP development, quality assurance, and production environments on Azure. Core ERP, main database, Hybris, retail, and loyalty functions are scheduled to go live in September 2018 to 150 users at corporate headquarters and about 400 stores. The systems will be live for all 10,000 Penti users by January 2019.

Unified performance and scalability

By adopting SAP HANA on Azure, Penti can unify its business, boost production, reduce costs, and streamline product innovation. With more visibility into all business data in one place, the company can accelerate new business models, deliver a better shopping experience, drive new revenue, and scale to meet its evolving business requirements.

“We are growing so fast that we don’t know what our exact needs will be in nine months,” says Dursun. “By using SAP HANA on Azure, we can scale our systems up and down at any time according to our needs.”

More innovation at lower cost

As Penti reduces operational costs, it can direct the savings, effort, and resources to strategic innovation. Instead of spending weeks estimating requirements and provisioning hardware or negotiating capacity with a local hosting provider, Penti can install HANA workloads on Azure in days. As Microsoft updates Azure services, Penti can keep up, without investing its own resources.

“We’ve always worked with limited IT resources for our needs,” says Dursun. “But with SAP HANA on Azure, we’ll actually free up time and money—and our existing engineers—for more strategic priorities.”

Success across boundaries

With SAP’s latest-generation ERP, S/4HANA on Azure, it will be easier to generate real-time insight into stock levels, merchandise changes, and supply chains and make sure that every store in almost 30 countries gets the right merchandise at the right season. Stores will run more smoothly, customers will get better service, and Penti will continue to succeed and expand across cultural and market boundaries.

“With SAP S/4HANA on Azure, we can better manage coordination between corporate headquarters, production, and our network of more than 400 stores—while we add 100 more,” says Dursun.
